Rfb issues safety advisory to road users during el niño rains
The Roads Fund Board (RFB) has urged road users to exercise caution during the El Niño rainfall season, which is expected to begin in late September and continue from October through December 2026.
According to the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), the rains are expected to begin between the fourth week of September and the first week of October 2026 in the Lake Victoria zone, before spreading to other parts of the country in October. Areas expected to receive normal to above-normal rainfall include the Lake Victoria zone, Northern Coast, Northeastern Highlands, and northern parts of Kigoma.
In view of the possibility of heavy rainfall and rising water levels, RFB reminds road users to exercise extra caution when approaching potentially hazardous areas, including bridges, crossings, culverts, road edges, valleys, slopes and mountainous areas, as well as slippery sections of road.
RFB Safety Advice to Road Users
- Bridges: Do not cross bridges that are flooded or where water is flowing rapidly.
- Crossings: Do not attempt to cross fast-flowing water or water of unknown depth.
- Culverts: Reduce speed and exercise caution where water is flowing across the road.
- Road edges: Keep away from road edges, particularly in areas affected by erosion.
- Valleys: Do not drive through areas with deep water or flooding.
- Slopes and mountainous areas: Reduce speed and watch out for landslides and falling rocks.
- Slippery sections: Reduce speed and avoid areas with waterlogged clay soil or stagnant water.
RFB urges all road users to prioritize safety, reduce speed, follow road signs and traffic instructions, and avoid attempting to cross flooded sections of road.
