Fuel Levies Driving Road Improvements in Tanzania: RFB Educates the Public
Citizens visiting the Roads Fund Board (RFB) exhibition booth during the ongoing Public Service Week celebrations at Chinangali Park in Dodoma have been provided with valuable insights into the primary source of funding that supports road maintenance across Tanzania.
Speaking to visitors at the exhibition, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Roads Fund Board (RFB), Engineer Rashid Kalimbaga, explained that levies charged on petrol and diesel fuel constitute the main source of funding for road maintenance in the country. He noted that this financing mechanism was specifically established to ensure that roads remain safe, of high quality, and accessible throughout the year.
Engineer Kalimbaga further stated that, in addition to fuel levy revenues, the Roads Fund receives income from charges paid by foreign vehicles using Tanzania’s road network. These revenues are collected and allocated directly to financing the maintenance of national and local government roads managed by TANROADS and TARURA.
He emphasized that investment in road maintenance plays a vital role in stimulating economic growth by facilitating the movement of people and goods, linking production areas with markets, and improving access to essential social services.
According to Engineer Kalimbaga, the Roads Fund currently finances the maintenance of a road network extending over 181,000 kilometres nationwide. This network continues to serve as a critical driver of development by supporting economic and social activities across different regions of Tanzania.
He added that every contribution generated through fuel levies is instrumental in ensuring that roads remain safe, reliable, and capable of efficiently serving the needs of citizens and the national economy.
Furthermore, Engineer Kalimbaga encouraged the public to visit the RFB booth during the Public Service Week celebrations to learn more about the Roads Fund’s mandate, its sources of revenue, and how these funds are utilized to improve road infrastructure for the benefit of all Tanzanians.
The 2026 Public Service Week celebrations are being held under the theme, “Promoting Inclusive Accountability for Sustainable Service Delivery,” reflecting the commitment to enhancing public service delivery through accountability and active stakeholder participation in national development.
